North Grenville Men’s Shed Supports Cycling Without Age (CWA)
Recently, one of our members took some seniors out on short rides in Smiths Falls with specialized bikes from Cycling Without Age (CWA). Notwithstanding the heat of the day, for over 2½ hours seven people, including two in wheelchairs, were taken for 40-minute rides around the area close to where they lived. This included cycling along the Rideau River and the Canal.

In Morrisburg, two riders (known as "pilots") took 11 seniors for bike rides, including 4 in wheelchairs. It was an easier ride than Smiths Falls as the ground in Morrisburg is much flatter! Rides along the St Lawrence River and through the lovely historic part of the village took about 45 minutes. Unfortunately, the bikes were required for another session in Prescott, cutting short the cycling. We could have easily taken out another 4 more people for bike rides.

In all cases the seniors had wonderful stories to tell. Both of the ladies below were from nearby settlements and had great stories to tell. Another lady was a great-great grandmother at 94 and “wasn't going anywhere soon”.

The man below was from Nova Scotia, she from Scotland. Both had wonderful stories to tell about immigration to Canada. For the pilot, it was lovely to listen to their life experiences.

There's no charge for any of the rides. With the help of sponsors, costs are all covered. We were hoping to provide rides in Kemptville this year. However, due to the work along Highway 43, this wasn't possible as smooth roads and paths, preferably away from traffic, is required to make the rides enjoyable.
North Grenville’s Men’s Shed is planning to offer rides next year using the specialized bikes. We look forward to giving many seniors a little bit of "wind in their hair".
